This is a piece I created in spring 2023 for an online art competition. The prompt was to make a Catrina based off of dia de muertos, a holiday celibrated in Mexico that honors people’s passed loved ones. However, there was a twist! We had to make it themed around our home towns. Since Berlin feels more like my home town than where I grew up, I chose Berlin as my inspiration. This prompt was very tricky for me because I didn’t want to cross a boundary into cultural appropriation. Thus I tried my best not to cross into that territory. I made this skeloton hold a joint, and be decked out on classic punk gear to really sell the Berlin culture a bit. I also covered the streets with class and walls with paste ups to nod to the cities graphiti and drinking culture.
