"Medusa, acrylic, and oil on canvas, 150x100cm
Medusa was inspired by old cigarette ads from the 50’s and ’60s.
You can see on the painting two sentences, one in English saying "smoke a fresh cigarette, free your inner beast" and another in Polish "palenie tytoniu powoduje raka i choroby serca" which means "smoking causes cancer and heart diseases ", showing how as a population we are making bad decisions, blindly following one another.
I like to put different styles together, so you have a vivid graphic optical background and a painterly figure coming out of it. The whole picture is vibrant and keeps your attention. There are also aggressive elements to it, like bright purple snakes.
Juxtaposed, medusa as a seductive Gorgon who could seduce you to look at her, and then she turned you into stone and Cigarettes as well as seductive and could be a result of your slow death.
Medusa’s head is said to represent the natural cycle of life, symbolizing rebirth and death."
